Description

A reinterpretation of Portuguese bureaus of the reign of Dom José I, whose furniture combined richly figured timbers with lively curves and carved Rococo detail. The shaped fall-front opens to a writing surface with open pigeonholes, small drawers and discreet compartments. Below, three broad serpentine drawers are framed by sweeping mouldings, carved uprights and scrolling bracket feet. Decorative metal escutcheons, drawer handles and carefully selected timber figure give the bureau its distinctive presence.

Historical Reference

Portugal, in the style of Dom José I (1750–1777), a period associated with Portuguese Rococo. The serpentine bombé form, scrolling carved supports, fitted interior and figured timbers draw on eighteenth-century Portuguese cabinetmaking. This is a newly manufactured interpretation, not a period antique.
