Florence Carved Cassone
An exuberantly carved cassone inspired by seventeenth-century Italian Renaissance and Baroque furniture, with mythological relief panels, sculptural figures, masks and boldly scrolling supports.
Description
Two deeply carved narrative panels dominate the front, each depicting reclining classical figures amid extravagant foliate scrollwork. A central grotesque mask and heraldic motif divide the composition, while carved standing figures mark the outer pilasters. Beneath the body, a continuous band of rosettes and powerful scroll feet with expressive masks give the chest its distinctive architectural presence. The long, low proportions make it suitable as a focal point in an entrance hall, drawing room or at the foot of a large bed. Its elaborate carving is intended to be appreciated at close range rather than reduced to a decorative surface treatment.
